Happy Independence Day from Anchor Publications!

"Great King of Nations, Hear Our Prayer" TLH 583
Great King of nations, hear our prayer While at Thy feet we fall And humbly with united cry To Thee for mercy call. The guilt is ours, but grace is Thine; Oh, turn us not away, But hear us from Thy lofty throne And help us when we pray.
Our fathers' sins were manifold, And ours no less we own; Yet wondrously from age to age Thy goodness hath been shown. When dangers, like a stormy sea, Beset our country round, To Thee we looked, to Thee we cried, And help in Thee was found.
With one consent we meekly bow Beneath Thy chast'ning hand And, pouring forth confession meet, Mourn with our mourning land. With pitying eye behold our need As thus we lift our prayer; Correct us with Thy judgments, Lord, Then let Thy mercy spare.

Handbook of Consolation
By John Gerhard
Translated by the faculty and students of The Martin Luther Institute of Sacred Studies
Decatur, Indiana 2009
Excerpt from the preface of "Handbook of Consolation": This Consolatory Handbook belongs to the treasures of edifying Lutheran literature. It appeared in 1611 in Latin. Its author, the great Lutheran dogmatician John Gerhard, was then the very youthful superintendent at Heldburg in Meiningischen. The work which established his reputation for all times, his Loci theologici, was begun during these years. Since he always strove to make Christian doctrine applicable to the Christian life, even his dogmatics is of enormous practical value, so in those years this consolatory handbook for the dying grew along side his very learned Loci. The Loci are, so to speak, like the garden of nature, in which all kinds of valuable plants grow; this handbook, however, might be compared to a little herb garden in which the plants and flowers have been planted by hand.
The great theologian planted this garden primarily for himself. Those were troubled times for him. On the tenth of January of 1611 his first and thus far only son died. In May the young mother died, and while she lay dying John Gerhard paced back and forth, his own body infirm. But the inward man was quite firm because of the healing herbs of God’s Word, which he well knew. He had planted these in our little herb garden for the strengthening of his own soul just a few weeks before the departure of his wife. Because he had written it for himself he wrote it in Latin, the mother-tongue of the learned of that day; but we do not err if we assume that he administered to his dear, departing wife one, then another healing herb in her time of trial and temptation. Thus, this little book, like few others, was experienced and proved by the author himself.......
